Doug Cornell

Candidate-provided statement

Cornell's campaign says he would use Strong Mayor powers only narrowly: as a genuine last resort to break a real Council deadlock and advance decisions with clear, demonstrated resident benefit, not to bypass debate or community input.

I am committed to using these powers narrowly: only as a genuine last resort, only to break a real Council deadlock, and only to advance decisions with clear, demonstrated benefit to residents. Never to bypass debate, and never to push through a decision the community hasn't had a real chance to weigh in on.

END THE CULTURE OF SECRECY Transparency and accountability must be restored at City Hall. Major financial decisions should be debated in open session whenever legally possible, council voting records should be clearly published and easily accessible, and strict rules should be implemented to limit sole-source contracting and backroom decision-making. The people of Pickering deserve an open and accountable government.
